Praise of the Bicycle (by Sergio Zavoli)
Romagna, my little China that pedals without pause. I love her also because she has not renounced the bicycle. This silent loyalty, never interrupted, not even in times of growth and abundance, is one of the civil prophecies of the Romagnoli, not even disproved when Armstrong left the imprint of his shoe on the Moon. That landing, it was said, made the world smaller. Psychologists reveled in the event: they warned us that the cause-effect relationship would take on a different speed, that our daily problems, habits, and tastes would no longer be the same.
Even a sports newspaper echoed those threats: “What will become of the bicycle, now that man measures himself against the cosmos?“…When the abuse of cars, threatened by the energy crisis, began to recede, everywhere there was a quick rummaging among the old iron to find the bicycle again; everywhere except in Romagna, where people had never repudiated it.
It was not, and is not, a poetics of small things, a rustic, chaste and resigned way of thinking, nor a habit of scarcity: in this land continually renewed by the modernity of its desires, the bicycle, on the contrary, is a way of tuning life with time and space, it is the going and the staying within measures still, I don't know for how long, human.
